Proportions of Animals

The most often mistake at drawing animals is wrong definition of proportions. The only way not allow it be to apply as a unit of measurements a head of an animal. Hold a pencil on the extended hand, as shown below.

Combine the end of a pencil with an extreme top point of a head of an animal. Then move the big finger of a hand on a pencil before visual overlapping edge of a finger with a chin of an animal. You now have unit of measurements and when you use it you can calculate, how many heads of an animal are required for definition of its height.

Make a draft sketch of a head and with the help of your unit of measurements count necessary amount of heads for exact definition of height and width. Do not overlook that the big finger of a hand should not be displaced on a pencil, and the pencil should be in a palm of the extended hand.

Next important thing is to sketch an animal in a correct pose. If you want to do it properly take pencil in absolutely vertical position to the floor.

Visually combine its end with edge a nose of the animal. Gradually drop your eyes , mark position and a corner of different parts of a body in relation to vertical contour of the pencil. Then incline the pencil to define other proportions of object . Cut from a cardboard two parts. Take them in hands and hold among themselves and the object you chose. Join up these parts. When you made it, you can see dimensional proportions of animals body which you can transfer on the paper. That is all for now.
